My alter-ego has just started on twitter and was told Jackie Collins gives these awesome prolific quotes with no thoughts to grammar or punctuation. Fine by me because I’m not big on either. And here you go – second day and she gives me one.
“If you’re not interested in the character, then u couldn’t give a damn about their sex life.”
Makes sense.
You need to make your readers care about your characters. Sound writing advice if you ask me.
I’m taking writing advice from Jackie Collins.
Now, I have a bit of a history with Jackie Collins. Hers was one of the first adult books I read, once I outgrew my Sweet Valley High and The Cheerleaders YA series. I know, it was a bit of a stretch from the innocent first loves of Jessica and Elizabeth Wakefield (although I suspect Jessica go around much more than her sister was aware of) to the dirty raunchiness of Lucky Santangelo. I jumped into the world of Italian mafia and Hollywood high-flyers with Jackie and I loved every minute of it.
And then there were the sexy bits. Remember the sexy bits?
I wouldn’t go so far as to describe Jackie Collins are writing erotica but she did like it dirty. Smut. Raunchy. Her characters liked sex and they liked a lot of it. I have to admit that it’s been a while since I’ve read anything by the notorious Ms. Collins but whenever my mother has been given one of her novels, I make sure it goes home with me. I’ve got at least two of her books in my TBR pile. I know they’ll be a day where I’ll pick them up again. In the mean time, I’ll take her advice and make you love my characters so you can’t wait to read about them getting busy with others!!!
